Rancho Mission Viejo’s 8th annual Turkey Trot on The Ranch is on Thursday, November 28, Thanksgiving Day! The run features a 10K, 5K, and a Little Gobbler’s 1K, that takes participants through the beautiful pathways and walkways of the Community of Rancho Mission Viejo.

All proceeds from the run will benefit The Nature Reserve at Rancho Mission Viejo, the entity responsible for education and conservation of the historic land of Rancho Mission Viejo.

The run will happen rain or shine!

Volunteer shifts include the following opportunities, so read below and pick the one that best suits you!

Medal Distribution
Finisher Recording
Photographers
E-Bike Marshalls

Please note that all volunteers under the age of 18 will require a parent's consent on their liability waivers. Volunteers must be a minimum of 13 years old to volunteer. Those who are between the ages of 13 and 15 years old must be accompanied by a guardian during the time of their shift. Volunteers who are 16 to 17 years old do not need a guardian, but will still require a guardian’s consent on their liability waiver. All participants and volunteers, regardless of age, must sign a liability waiver prior to their shift.

All volunteers must arrive by 7:00AM if you volunteer on the day of the run, and will be able to leave after their stations have been cleaned up.

Turkey Mascot

6:30 AM - 11:00 AM Skills:

The Turkey Mascot will wander around with the crowds to interact with the public, take photos, cheer people on, and embody the fun spirit of the Turkey Trot. The Turkey will be partnered with a "Turkey Handler" volunteer who will assist the turkey with taking photos, managing the crowds, giving the turkey breaks, etc.

Important things to remember the day of the event:

While we're hopeful for beautiful weather, we've historically had the occasional inclement weather.
- Please bring appropriate attire in the event that it rains – water proof shoes, poncho to go over your clothes, umbrella, etc.
- It’s usually warmer towards the end of the event, so please bring appropriate layers.
- If the mascot costume needs to be removed or adjusted for any reason, please do so out of sight of any of the guests.
Please keep in mind the main highlights of the event that morning (i.e. national anthem, run start times, run results and medal distributions, people crossing the finish line, guests posing at the photo op at Sendero Field, etc.).
Arrival time is 6:30AM.
Volunteers can park at the Guest House (11 Brioso, Rancho Mission Viejo, CA 92694) to check in and have a little breakfast snack before guests arrive.
Volunteers will be shuttled to their destinations.
The 10K starts at 8:00AM and the 5K run starts at 8:30AM at The Pavilion.
When you are done at the 10K and 5K start line at The Pavilion, you will be shuttled on a cart back to Sendero Field. The turkey will want to go immediately to the photo op to take photos with the top three runners for both men and women's categories.
After the winners are done, the turkey will spend time cheering runners on that cross the finishing line.
The turkey will help to get the 1K runners excited to run by non-verbally cheering them on. The 1K will begin at 10:00AM.

Turkey Mascot Handler

6:30 AM - 11:00 AM Skills:

Keeping track of time and make sure that the turkey is where he needs to be for all the important moments of the event:
- 6:30AM arrival time
- Will be shuttled up to The Pavilion by 7:00AM
- Help the Turkey get ready to visit with the crowds
- 7:30AM, be at the start line
- 7:55AM, National Anthem at start line
- 10K starts at 8:00AM and 5K run starts at 8:30AM
- Take a volunteer cart down to Sendero Field ahead of the 5K runners
- Be at the photo op at Sendero Field to take photos with the winning runners
- High-fiving and cheering on the rest of the runners crossing the finish line
- Making sure that the turkey is at the 1K start line at Sendero Field by 9:45AM
- 1K run starts at 10:00AM
- Remain at event to assist turkey as needed until the majority of the runners/guests are gone
Providing the turkey with breaks when needed
Assisting guests with taking photos with the turkey
Assisting the turkey with costume needs
Will wear a volunteer vest with nametag

National Anthem Singer

7:00 AM - 8:30 AM Skills:

Sing the national anthem the kick off the Turkey Trot Event.

Assisting runners with packet pick up the day of the run at The Pavilion.

Distribute medals at the end of the run to all participants and keep watch over medal supply.

Write down the names and times of the top three finishers of the race for both women and men divisions (six total for 5K).

Bring your e-bike and lead the way for the course and assist runners with staying on the designated course.
