Health Improvement Foundation of Cameroon
The Health Improvement Foundation of Cameroon (HIF-CAM) is a nonprofit, non-governmental organization incorporated under Cameroon law in 2003. We are based in Cameroon – Limbe, and are committed to achieving the following mission: “We provide quality and affordable healthcare services to everyone in the rural communities deprived of healthcare access, making sure no one dies of disease”. Our vision of a better world is for everybody to attain a level of health that enables him or her to realize his or her dreams.
HIF-CAM operates on the core values of compassion, innovation, collaboration, social justice, gender equality, environmental sustainability, transparency, and empowerment. We are driven by a deep sense of empathy for the poor, marginalized rural communities owing to the injustice of healthcare inaccessibility, resulting in the rising death rate, especially among the under-fives.
To attain its mission HIF-CAM provides the following programs and services:
Our track record includes the following executed projects: Ten health projects (including the training of over 150 primary healthcare workers and the construction and equipping of eight health centers; the execution of eight water and hygiene projects comprising the supply of clean water to needy villages through four spring catchments and four boreholes; water management committees (including 32 members) were trained to manage all the water projects and improve community hygiene and sanitation. The above-executed projects are currently serving a total population of over 489,000 inhabitants.
The following qualified and experienced staff of HIF-CAM are responsible for the successful implementation of all our health projects: Chief Lewindia Nicholas (Project Coordinator); Dr. Elong Felix (Medical Adviser); Mr. Fobisong (Accounts Officer); Mr. Oliver Fonju (Program Manager); Mrs. Theresia Teleh-Amoh (General Nursing Supervisor); Mr. Ebasoh Benedict (Civil Engineer - hired); and Mr. Tebou Zacharia (Hydrologic Engineer - hired). The project team also includes qualified volunteers.
HIF-CAM is unique and different from other nonprofit organizations in Cameroon in that it conceives, plans, and executes projects - using a novel approach known as the Multi-Community Project Approach (MCPA) - whereby a health center is built and equipped to serve three or four beneficiary communities closely situated. Their community leaders and representatives come together to create a Joint Health Management Committee empowered to own and co-manage the health project with the healthcare providers. This system of healthcare delivery is cheap, sustainable, and effective and can be scaled and replicated in any rural community locally and globally.
